Hello
You have already made the first step into finding a therapist. Therapy can be overwhelming because one of the most important aspects of therapist is feeling a connection and building a rapport with your therapist. So, I would like to introduce myself to see if you are interested in having a session with me and get some insight on how I got to where I am now as a therapist and who I am as a person.
My Story
My name is Melissa Koway-Montana and I am Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC) providing psychotherapy services in Pennsylvania. I received my undergraduate degree at Neumann University and received my Bachelor's of Science in Psychology. I then went Immaculata University and received my Master of Arts in Clinical Mental Health Counseling. I worked in many different environments and populations throughout the years. I first worked with children in the schools, in their homes, in the community and in outpatient setting as a therapeutic staff support, outpatient therapist, mobile therapist, and behavior consultant. I then worked as an outpatient therapist in community mental health working with adults with a variety of mental health diagnoses. Throughout all of this I knew I wanted to be within my niche and worked for a company where I was able to focus on eating disorders, OCD, anxiety, chronic illness and ADHD and I currently also work for a group practice working with these diagnoses.
I have lived with a chronic illness (epilepsy) my whole life. I understand the struggles with come along with living with an invisible illness and needing to rely on medication for the rest of my life. I realized at a young age that there are things outside of my control and over time and throughout my struggles in life I have accepted that and consistently work towards the things within my control. Physical health and mental health go hand in hand. When you deal with a chronic illness, it is common to also deal with a fair share of mental health concerns. I struggled with anxiety, depression, and an eating disorder and received my own treatment. I understand how difficult and scary it is to recover from an eating disorder, but I want you to know that it is possible. I wanted to focus my attention on treating eating disorders in the outpatient setting due to knowing how difficult it is to find a therapist who actually understands firsthand the experience.
I live with my boyfriend, my daughter, and my 2 Boston Terriers. In my spare time I like to take walks with my dogs, hang out with family and friends, do home projects, photography, ride my dirt bike, jet ski or canoe, or take camping trips.
